Many thanks to Mr. Lien for all his help during my visit to Taiwan!

During my visit to Taiwan in August 2024, I had the privilege to perform on a 2023 Montagnana
model cello by Taiwanese instrument maker David Lien, owner of Lien Violins. This instrument
has a great response, warmth and projection. In addition, the cello was comfortable to play.
I think this cello checks all the boxes for a top quality modern instrument. It was a joy to perform
a piano trio concert on this cello. Balance in this ensemble can be problematic for the cellist, but
this instrument had no issues projecting.
Mr. Lien loaned me an incredible bow by Hans-Karl Schmidt that was a perfect complement to
the cello. This bow is perfectly balanced with a strong and flexible stick. It drew out a resonant
and complex sound from the Montagnana model cello. It was easy to mold the sound and
articulate for purposes of expression.
Mr. Lien also provided me with a Sound Plus D cello endpin holder which he designed in
collaboration with Taiwanese sound engineer Dong Yen Wu. The Sound Plus D enhanced the
projection and resonance of this already excellent instrument.
Overall, I think this instrument delivers the quality sought after by professional cellists. The
Hans-Karl Schmidt bow was a perfect compliment to this cello. Mr. Lien has a fantastic selection
of instruments and bows. I was also impressed with the setup of the instruments I tried. I
encourage string players to visit Lien Violins locations in Taiwan and check out their inventory.
Also, if you are a cellist, ask to try the Sound Plus D cello endpin holder while you are there.
Many thanks to Mr. Lien for all his help during my visit to Taiwan!
